Here is an article by Robin Wynn setting out 4 scenarios to assist managers in deciding when to coach employees themselves, and when to bring in an external coach.  The scenarios include where the personal relationship makes it difficult to address areas for improvement, where the employee is uncomfortable with coaching and where star employees need high-level coaching.
